Volunteer Opportunities

Unitarian Universalists of Coastal Georgia have an active Social Justice program. Major activities this year including working toward becoming a Green Sanctuary, supporting the Adult Literacy Center in Brunswick and working with the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation program on Baby Steps, which provides books for young children.

For several years we have worked with FaithWorks Ministries, an ecumenical group drawing from many area churches. Our main involvement with them now is collecting items for them to distribute. Needs include clothing, toiletries, games and household items. In the past few years, the church has provided assistance to Safe Harbor, a shelter for youths, Harmony Square, a day care provider, and LARC, which provides services for Latinos.

The congregation also is involved with the Glynn Environmental Coalition, a community organization dedicated to providing a clean environment and healthy economy in the Golden Isles area. We have marched regularly in the Martin Luther King parade, participated in roadside trash clean ups and helped the Brunswick police with a gun buy back program.

Under the leadership of Sharon Ehle, there is a team actively working on making the church more environmentally friendly. This is a UUA sanctioned program called Green Sanctuary.

The work with the Literacy Center came at the urging of member Billie Conyers. Needed help here includes tutoring, office help, donations for textbooks and a scholarship fund.

We have recently become involved with Baby Steps. A basket in our vestibule awaits donations of new or very gently used books for ages infant to five years. Research is showing more and more that exposure to vocabulary, books and reading at the earliest years of a child's life is the biggest determinant of success in school. Some UUs are becoming readers in the Baby Step program.

The Social Justice Team now is providing a service on the second Sunday of each month, bringing in speakers, films and displays on social justice issues in our community. The service is at 10:30 am, the same time as our regular worship services on other Sundays.

Unitarians Cosponsor Ethnic Festival with College

One World - Many Faces: International Culture & food Festival, takes place on the campus of the College of Coastal Georgia each April. It is a collaboration between UUCG Social Justice Team, the Robert S. Abbott Race Unity Institute, Inc., and the College.

In its first two years, the event has fulfilled its goal of bringing many cultures together for an afternoon. Foods and artwork from many different ethnic groups have helped make the festival's success grow each year.
